First Post
This is the first post on a domain I think I registered some time in the mid-00's and didn't do much with in the intervening 20 years.
The domain itself was inspired by the subtitle to Radiohead's YEAR album Hail to the Thief (the gloaming).
I've used the domain for my non-gmail, fastmail.fm hosted email in an attempt to use Google's service less without actually ceasing to use the gmail account.
So, here in 2026 I've finally hit on a use for it as a place to host and write about software and computing projects, acceptable(?) uses of LLMs and home cooked, vibe coded software. I'm hoping to use what I know about these tools and technologies to turn some ideas into things here. I'd like to learn some stuff along the way as well, not only, or just, present the outputs of an LLM, though I'll probably do that too.
For myself, using LLMs for writing is a red line, but using Claude Code to help manage files for this static site, tweak CSS or spit out bits and pieces of a web app feels like it's more in line with what I expect a computer to do for me, instead of a replacement for some of my thinking.
There's a lot about LLMs to be excited about as an enabling technology, perhaps as an e-bike for the mind, and perhaps on balance much more to be wary, skeptical and careful about. As with a great many others who have spent large portions of our lives tinkering, playing with, learning and working with computers over my life, I find this technology to be intersting, sometiems even fascinating. I'm going to see how to think about software and computing knowledge here in 2026.
